Bring your work

From Rhino

Export your Rhino models as GLB with physically based materials and textures, ready for product, jewellery and design renders in Auddomate.

Export a GLB

Rhino 8 exports glTF and GLB directly:

  1. Select what you want to export, or nothing to export everything.
  2. Choose File → Export Selected, or File → Save As for the whole model.
  3. Under Files of type, choose the glTF format, and enter a file name ending in .glb, so everything travels in one file.
  4. Click Options, and turn on Map Rhino Z to glTF Y and Export materials.
  5. Export, then drag the .glb file onto the render in Auddomate.

Mesh quality

glTF stores meshes, not NURBS, so Rhino converts your surfaces to triangles when it exports, using its render mesh quality. For smooth jewellery, bottles and curved product surfaces, raise the render mesh quality in Document Properties → Mesh before exporting. SubD objects use the Subdivision level export option.

Turn on Export vertex normals, so curved surfaces render smooth instead of faceted.

Materials

Use Physically Based materials, the metallic-roughness kind, for everything you export. Rhino's documentation recommends them for consistent results, and they map directly onto Auddomate's materials:

  • Gold, silver and platinum: metallic at 1, with the metal's color as the base color.
  • Gemstones and glass: set transmission or opacity so they become glass.
  • Polished plastic and lacquer: metallic at 0, with a low roughness, and a clear coat if you want depth.

Textures in those materials are embedded in the GLB.

Units

glTF is always in metres. Check your model's units are set correctly in Document Properties → Units, so a ring arrives ring-sized and a building building-sized. That matters for depth of field, where real size decides how much blurs.

Cameras, lights and animation

Rhino's glTF export carries geometry and materials. Set up your shot in Auddomate with its camera controls, and light it with a sky or studio. For product and jewellery work, the Studio sky with its softboxes is a perfect starting point.
