The aisle clearance check

The single most useful thing on the plan, and the cheapest place to find out an aisle is too narrow.

#How it works

Every shape you draw as an aisle is measured across its narrow side — the smaller of its width and height in real units. That figure is compared with the minimum aisle of the most demanding machine on the study's fleet — the one with the largest minimum. Site Layout names it in the panel.

  • Narrower than the minimum: the aisle turns red on the plan, and the panel names it with its width and the width needed.
  • Wide enough: it stays green.
  • No machines on the fleet yet: the check is skipped and the panel says so. Add one on the Fleet page.

#Why the narrow side

An aisle is a corridor. A machine moves along it and needs to fit across it. The long dimension is how far the aisle goes; the short one is what the truck has to pass through. A 40 m by 3 m aisle is a 3 m aisle.

#What ends up in the report

Every failing aisle is listed by name, width and shortfall. It appears whether or not anyone wanted it to — the report is meant to be the thing that stops a truck being ordered for a building it cannot turn in.

The check is only as accurate as the plan and the scale. A drawing that is out of date, or a two-point scale measured carelessly, produces a confident answer that is wrong. Confirm any marginal aisle on site with a tape.

#What it does not do

It checks width only. It does not check turning radius at aisle ends, headroom against lift height, floor loading, or intersections. Those are on the profile for reference and for your own judgement.
